Sunday 25th December 2011

After opening presents and a bacon sandwich in bed, Chris and I decided to head out for an hour or so. Our first thought was to go to Ballaghennie but, on seeing the white caps on the waves we decided to head to the Point of Ayre to see if there were any birds flying past just above the waves. A good high tide was due today and we hoped for some dramatic seascapes.

On arrival at the point, it was windy but the sea wasn't as dramatic as we'd hoped. I went for a short walk, Chris got out of the car briefly before heading back to the warmth and comfort!

And so, we headed home - I had a new Kindle to play with.

Saturday 24th December 2011

Well, this was to be our last walk for this year as I am working on the 31st. We were hoping for nice weather but, once again grey with a high probability of showers.

We decided to first go to Maughold Church to do some interior shots of it decorated for Christmas. This would mean Dave would have some more to add to the Facebook page.

After we left Maughold, we decided to go to the Dhoon. We thought it would be sheltered from the wind (it was), there should be lots of water coming down the falls and we hoped the rain would hold off. There was quite a bit of debris and quite a few fallen trees in the glen but, there was a fair bit of water and, as the trees had very few leaves the area around the falls was open.

I asked Dave to stand under the falls, to give my pictures an idea of scale but, he wouldn't. I even offered to hold his camera so it wouldn't get wet!

We headed up from the beach, on the side path rather than the one through the glen, then Dave noticed a fork in the path. We decided to take it to see where it led - at first it appeared to be heading in the right direction until, it brought us out just above the falls so, back up the steps we went.

We arrived back at the car and decided to go to Laxey for lunch. There were some surfers in the water but, they weren't going out very far or attempting to stand on their boards so we didn't bother attempting any shots.

By now, it was dull, fairly dark and kept trying to rain. We decided to head for the Mountain Road to see if we could see any brighter areas. We headed down towards Sulby as the weather darkened. As we came out in Sulby, it looked slightly brighter towards Ballaugh so, we decided on a walk along the railway lines. We headed out hopefully but, the day got darker and we had a couple of light showers so, headed home after a circular route

Sunday 18th December 2011

This morning was a lot brighter than yesterday with blue skies and sunshine that had some warmth in it. However, it didn't make it any easier to come up with somewhere to go. After calling in at Total to pick up a new hat for Chris (the one I bought him a few weeks ago having mysteriously disappeared), we started our morning off with a wander in Mooragh Park.

As I headed back towards the car, Chris told me about the fountain in the sensory garden that he had been taking pictures of so, I headed in there to have a go.

I had a play in Photoshop with one shot.

After leaving Mooragh Park, we headed for Parliament Street. The shops were open today (so we thought) for Christmas shopping and we were hoping there would be people about. However, it seems we were a little early as, there were not many shops open.

As I walked back to the car along the quay, I noticed a boat with a number of rubber gloves hanging - maybe this is why I kept finding them on the beach

We then headed onto the beach below the lifeboat station. The tide was out so we were able to walk almost to the end of the stone piers. On the way down, we looked through to the opposite pier - I never knew there were steps underneath - I wonder why they were built like this

I walked onto the ledge at the end of the stone pier to get a slightly different view of the beach

Finally, we headed over to the beach on the other side of the harbour and took a walk along towards the Grand Island.

So, that's it for another week. Only five working days and then we are both off for a week. Hoping for some nice weather...

Saturday 17th December 2011

Dave arrived and we were both without any inspiration as to where to go. It was cold, grey, a little windy and with a promise of wintry showers. After a bit of discussion we decided to head into the Curraghs as it was usually sheltered there. For a change, we would park at Close Sartfield and walk the roads in a loop to end up back at the car. We would include a diversion to see if we could see Wallaby en route.

We started getting our stuff out of the car and had our first wintry shower. We jumped back into the car and waited for the hail to stop. Dave declared that the weather was being blown from behind us and, there was better weather behind the hail so, when it stopped we set out on our walk. As we arrived at Penny Holdings another wintry shower started. No car to jump into this time! We walked under the trees which gave some shelter. There was very little to be seen, the wildlife was probably sensibly tucked away somewhere. Eventually, we arrived back at the car having seen one Wallaby (distant views and, that poor light we would have needed arc lights to get a shot) and having taken one picture.

As there had been reports of fresh snowfall on the Mountain Road, we decided to head up Sulby Glen to see if we could get any pictures. As we got our first view of Snaefell, it wasn't looking promising. We drove to the Bungalow anyway but, nothing. We decided to head back down to Sulby reservoir to eat our lunch and plan our afternoon.

A few weeks ago, an article in Manx Tails had mentioned some ruins in Tholt-y-Whil plantation so, over lunch we decided we would see if we could find them. However, the sun went in, the hail started and we soon decided it was a bad idea. We headed back down the glen and towards Ramsey and noticed it was looking bright out towards Maughold so, that is where we headed next.

As we were driving towards Port Mooar, we saw ominous clouds over Snaefell so, decided to park at Port Mooar then walk back up the road to see if we could get pictures.

As we walked back towards the car, the sun started shining over a field with some sheep in

We then headed over to Ballaglass, via the Quaker burial site. On arrival we noticed some new gate posts so that you can now get into the field beyond it. There is a partially built structure (which is going to have seats in) looking over what looks like earthworks. There are also lovely views to be had across to Maughold Head and looking south.

As we carried on towards Ballaglass, we stopped for a picture of the ridge from North Barrule to Snaefell

We parked up at Ballaglass and went for a walk through a rather muddy glen. No ND filters required today to get slow shutter speeds but, very little light for shots without a tripod

By the time we returned to the car the sun had set and it was getting dark so, we headed home to sit in front of a nice log fire with a cup of coffee.
